2000 was identified early on as an excellent and sometimes even outstanding vintage for red wines. The summer enabled the different grape varieties to reach perfect ripeness. The juice of this 2000 vintage was outstanding. It is most certainly the year that Pontet-Fumet came closest to the ideal expression of its terroir. Obviously the technical resources Philippe Bardet has available now would have enabled him to do even better today, but the palate was full of class. Many of the Saint-Emilion classed growths have never reached the quality of this ethereal structure, which is very full, elegant, truffled to perfection, fresh and really complex.”
