“2003 was an atypical year. The August heatwave will be remembered by all. Similar conditions were only encountered way back in 1893, so well outside winegrowers’ living memory! The usual calendar for vineyard work and harvesting was completely turned inside out. The winegrowers, who didn’t seek to over-extract their wines made the best wines of the vintage as long as their terroirs were able to resist the lack of water. 2003 will be remembered for its blistering heatwave. The tannins of this 2003 appear to be ripe. The wines are slightly jammy, a bit like fruit preserved in brandy, but truly fresh on the finish. Overall, the wine is flavoursome and spicy with a remarkably complex “Baroque” finish.”
